Loan Specialist


The Loan Specialist is responsible for timely maintenance of all credit union member loans. The Loan Specialist protects the interests of the credit union and limits risk exposure by ensuring that all loan collateral is insured.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Verify incoming loans for accurate financials and rates, appropriate approvals, documents, disclosures, and signatures, and follow-up with these items as needed before filing the loan
  • Approve loans according to appropriately assigned lending authority
  • Scan all supporting loan documents and maintain digital records on file
  • Respond to inquiries from members and employees on issues with existing loans
  • Research and actively resolve problems with current loans
  • Provide back-up assistance in the department, filling in as needed for other positions
  • Assist with testing of new loan processes and procedures
  • Assist in meeting the objectives for the department as set forth in the credit union's strategic plan
  • Independently applies and carries out policies and procedures within assigned area of responsibility
  • Cross-sell credit union products and services based on member needs
  • Maintain the inventory of loan related documents, review for updates, and re-order as needed
  • Comply with credit union policies for all employees, including fraud policy and computer usage policy
  • NMLS ID registration
  • Take, process and underwrite Home Equity products
  • Attend credit union training as required
  • Other duties as assigned


  • Intermediate computer knowledge and experience with Microsoft Office programs such as Word, and Excel required
  • Experience with Encore software (SCC) and the Symitar operating system is preferred
  • Ability to learn and use vendor software, external websites, and company's core processing system.
  • Ability to work accurately with numbers and perform intermediate mathematical calculations with accuracy.
  • Experience with a 10-key calculator is required
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Ability to exercise judgment, logic, and initiative with integrity
  • High degree of accuracy with attention to detail required
  • Ability to interpret and explain instructions, policies, processes and procedures
  • Creative problem-solving skills to effectively identify and resolve loan issues with member accounts
  • Communicate and interact with members and co-workers in a professional, courteous and confidential manner
  • Effective interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skill
  • Ability to maintain composure under pressure and manage stressful situations with patience and courtesy
  • Take initiative and lead by example
  • Performs at a consistently high level

Education and/or Experience:

  • Minimum three years experience in a financial institution; specifically working with loans in lending or branch operations
  • Minimum two years of customer service experience/call-center environment preferred
  • Must be bondable and maintain bondability throughout employment with the credit union
  • Advanced knowledge of credit union loan processing, preferably in Symitar systems

  • Occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds
